Skyborg Tower aka Blackbeards Castle

St. Thomas

1679

Skytsborg Tower (Danish for “sky tower”) was built in 1679. The tower stands above Kongen’s quarter in the middle of Charlotte Amalie. It was once used as a lookout to identify enemy ships entering the harbor. To serve as a good vantage point, the tower was built about 40-feet-tall with six-foot thick walls. There is a hidden spiral staircase hidden inside. Once inside a person could enjoy views of the Charlotte Amalie Harbor, as well as St Croix and all the way to Puerto Rico.
